about
“Bença Mãe” the second song - “Flor de Aruanda” was the first - to be taken from his forthcoming album, is sung in praise of his mother, his grandmother and by extension, all mothers. As Rael says “It’s always the mother who keeps it together in this shitty patriarchal system” and the video, released July 2nd, features his own mother, while his grandmother is remembered through the figure of Dona Cotinha and her daughter, Ana Maria Lemes, as they bless people in the São Bernardo do Campo area of São Paulo.
“My grandmother was a healer but her culture is disappearing. I have a memory of our house full of people being treated with chants and natural remedies” remembers Rael. “Dona Cotinha does beautiful work, it's a direct connection to the world of my grandmother.”
Less comfortably, perhaps, is his incorporation of an excerpt from an impassioned speech made by Sandra Mara da Silva Aldrovande. Her son, Jean, was murdered in May this year as he arrived to teach at the Complexo do Alemão favela in Rio de Janeiro.
